Mural Project for Underrepresented Students-Open Forum-November 18, 6-8pm in the Green and Gold Room

November 17, 2015

Dear Colleagues,

Many of you may recall in Spring of 2014 President Richmond gave F.R.E.E. a $10,000 grant to install a mural on campus in response to the Super Taco painting issue.  The Super Taco painting was done by a senior graduate, won the art contest, and the painting was purchased by the president's office and installed in the Jolly Giant dining room.  Several of our students and employees on campus were concerned by the message and location of the painting, facilitated conversations were held and the painting was later moved to the library.

F.R.E.E. has been working with Marisol Ruiz, Cesar Abarca, Traci Ferdolage and Kris Patzlaff regarding the mural.  They have discussed image, location, selecting the artist and installation.  The students, with their faculty advisers Cesar Abarca and Marisol Ruiz, presented the mural and the artist they selected to the Facilities Working Group.  The artist is a renowned mural artist.  Kris has researched him and thinks he is a good choice. He has spoken to several student groups over the past year to get input into the mural.
He is arriving on campus this week and will begin installing the mural later in the week.  To give the campus an opportunity to meet him and hear from our students about the mural content, we have scheduled an open forum.  It will be on Wednesday, November 18 from 6pm to 8pm in the Green and Gold Room.  Please see the attached flyer for further details.  Please share this with others who may be interested.  Thanks!
