Next Steps on Renewed Provost Search

April 13, 2015
To the University community:
As indicated in my February message, we are renewing our search for a Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. I’d like to organize the search committee in the next few weeks, before the end of the semester, and ask the committee to review the position announcement and job description, recommend appropriate changes, and begin the advertising process. Ideally, we can launch the process over the summer, interview candidates in the fall, and have a new provost join us in January.
I am still working on the question of an interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs to help us out starting in July, and I’ll share more information as soon as it is available. I am grateful to Dr. Jenny Zorn for her service as interim Provost this year. The University — and I — have benefitted from her breadth of experience, knowledge of the CSU, and overview of academic programs, and I am very glad she will be with us through June.
The search committee for the Provost position is outlined in the Faculty Handbook, and it includes the following:
  • Faculty members, one from each college and one from the University Library, elected by the faculty of the Colleges and the University Library.
  • One or two non-academic staff members selected by the President or designee.
  • One or two deans appointed by the President or designee.
  • One vice president appointed by the President.
  • Two students, one undergraduate and one graduate, selected by the Associated Students.
  • The President or designee may select one or more members in consultation with the Executive Committee of the Senate. These members will serve to represent areas or issues not represented by the above.
  • The President or designee will appoint the chair of the search committee.
I will be asking the deans of the three colleges and the library to hold elections for faculty representatives for this committee. I’m asking Staff Council to provide recommendations for one or two staff members to serve, and Associate Students will be invited to nominate an undergraduate and graduate student.
I want to express my appreciation again to the search committee that worked so hard on this search process over the past year. Dr. Monty Mola’s role as chair was invaluable, and his well-earned sabbatical leave will provide him with a good break in the next academic year (he would probably also note that this means he cannot be elected to serve on the search committee again).
I’ll keep you posted as this process moves forward. Thanks for your support and your interest in this important undertaking.
With best wishes,

LAR
