NOTICE OF CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY LIBRARY SEISMIC RETROFIT PHASE I

June 13, 2016

Project Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to ensure the Library building is structurally retrofitted to contemporary building standards relative to seismic provisions of the California Building Code.

The Library Seismic Retrofit Phase I (Summer/Fall 2016):
The Project will replace the tile roof, paint the exterior of the building, and augment the size of the exterior columns with concrete. Other activities include replacement of exterior lighting with LED fixtures and improving the buildings entry gates and accessible pathway. Additionally, there will be limited interior work that includes moving interior book stacks on the first, second, and third floors of the building.

Detailed Update (June 10, 2016):
The Project Team will be updating the campus community biweekly, updated notes are as follows:

July 2016

  • First Floor: As early as the first week of July 2016, work to remove the reference shelves and atlas shelves will begin, followed by replacing the carpeting at the impacted areas.
  • Building Perimeter/Exterior: Construction period for the roof is scheduled to begin July 18, 2016 and ends November 2016. Between July 18 and August 19 the perimeter construction area will be set and roofing tiles will be taken off the roof. Construction laydown areas will be confirmed, detours established pedestrian safety erected and will be communicated to the campus.

August 2016

  • August 1-26, 2016, shelving removal followed by carpeting sequence begins. This includes the removal of vacated shelving sections. Re carpeting of select areas and reconfiguring shelving with seismic retrofit to a reduced footprint. Areas include o 3rd floor: formerly California Document Shelves
  • 2nd floor: Periodical Shelves
  • Basement: Construction of shelving

Fall Semester

  • Computer Lab / Classroom 121 will be not available for regular classes during fall due to construction of Seismic Retrofit will impact windows in classroom. Specific construction dates to be determined.
  • Building perimeter: Exterior Column strengthening construction will occur within the dates of October 2016 – February 2017. The Project team will work with the Contractor and Library Occupants on a scheduled noise periods. To allow for partial day activities that will include loud concrete work around the perimeter of the building. The intent is to allow for morning or afternoon programs to resume with reduced interruption.
  • First Floor maps will be relocated into Humboldt Scholars Lab area by October 2016

Campus Impact:
During the construction period both the main entries to the basement and the first floor will remain open and accessible. The exterior walkways under the exterior canopies at the basement level, and the first floor level will be within the construction zone and will not have public access. Additionally, the library parking lot will be impacted for contractor laydown space.

Once a contractor is selected for this project a detailed detour and parking lot map will be published with the campus. There will be periods of noise related to concrete work and demolition of roofs and structure. Also there will be scaffolding and large equipment moving around the building. Visible construction zones and detours will be established and communicated to Library occupants as construction moves forward.
