Notice of Construction Activity Library Seismic Retrofit Phase I

September 26, 2016

Project Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to ensure the Library building is structurally retrofitted to contemporary building standards relative to seismic provisions of the California Building Code. (PDF of map attached below).

The Library Seismic Retrofit Phase I (Summer/Fall 2016):

PHASE I has been revised to include the replacement of the tile roof and exterior painting  and limited interior work that includes moving interior book stacks on the first, second, and third floors of the building.

The exterior seismic upgrades relative to exterior concrete columns, replacement of exterior lighting with LED fixtures and improving the buildings entry gates and accessible pathway, will now be considered PHASE II and will be implemented starting after Graduation, May 2017. The construction period for Phase II will be May 2017 – December 2017 with the majority of the heavy concrete work being conducted in the summer months. Additionally, there will be interior work that includes the final book stack retrofit, minor suspended ceiling seismic improvements and ADA required modifications. Over the 16/17 semesters, the project team will be working with Library occupants and leadership to better refine a detailed construction impact plan with regards to phase II work.

Detailed Update (September 23, 2016)

The Project Team will be updating the campus community biweekly, updated notes are as follows:

September 2016

  • Second floor book stacks including periodicals located just outside of the Fishbowl will be reconfigured and permanently braced with an anticipated start date of September 26. This work will include re-carpeting of select areas and work will be completed within five weeks of its start date.
  • The Roofing and Painting Contractor has begun setting temporary construction site measures with an anticipated construction start date of September 26. This will include select parking stalls in the Library Lot FS6 (beginning Monday 9/26) and the unpaved extension of Laurel Street located between LK Wood and the FS6 Lot.
  • The Contractor will be establishing pedestrian detours around the building as needed for safety and Contractor access, as well as pedestrian tunnels to provide safe entry and egress from the Library.
  • All entrances to the Library will remain operational in their normal function (general, staff only, emergency, etc.), unless work on or directly above an entrance requires a detour to be temporarily utilized.

Campus Impact:
During the construction period for Fall 2016 (Phase I) and Summer 2017/Fall 2017 (Phase II) the main entries to the basement and the first floor will remain open and accessible. The exterior walkways under the exterior canopies at the basement level, and the first floor level will be within the construction zone and will not have public access. Additionally, the library parking lot will be impacted for contractor laydown space. In support of Phase I, a detailed detour and parking lot is attached to this announcement. There will be periods of noise related to construction lifts and roof activity. Also there will be scaffolding and large equipment moving around the building. Visible construction zones and detours will be established and communicated to Library occupants as construction moves forward.
