November FREE Conservation Lectures at Sequoia Park Zoo

November 8, 2016

Hello colleagues and community members,

The Sequoia Park Zoo Conservation Lecture Series continues with “An Update on Luna,” the story of a tree that has grown to become a symbol of sustainability, strength and resilience, by Stuart Moskowitz of Sanctuary Forest. The Lecture will be held this Wednesday, November 9 at 7 pm, at the Zoo’s Flamingo Room following a reception at 6:30 p.m.

Julia Butterfly Hill’s famous tree-sit in October 1997 as a protest against the logging brought a worldwide attention to a Redwood named Luna. Shortly after Butterfly Hill’s descent, a vandal’s chainsaw failed to bring an end to Luna. Instead, the attack brought Luna back into the news. Today, Luna remains healthy, her message about sustainability is stronger than ever, and the world continues telling her story.

For over 20 years, Moskowitz has balanced his teaching of mathematics at Humboldt State University with volunteering on the board of directors of Sanctuary Forest, a southern Humboldt non-profit Land and Water Trust.  In 1999, Moskowitz agreed to become the lead monitor for the easement created to protect the Luna tree following the two-year tree-sit by Butterfly Hill. Moskowitz has been Luna’s guardian and spokesperson ever since.
