Security Check - Do You Have Level I Data on Your Computer?

March 19, 2019

It's bad enough to have your own social security number on your computer. But it's a lot worse if someone else's information ends up on your computer - that's a situation that can cause problems not just for you but for the university.

So once a year, ITS requires all employees to run Spirion (formerly called Identity Finder) software on their computer to check for the presence of Level I data. Level 1 data is the kind of personally identifiable information (including social security numbers) that can be used by hackers and identity thieves. Spirion is already installed on your computer, so just set it to run one day before you leave the office, and it'll be all done by the time you come in next day. Keep your computer running that day, and lock the screen before you leave (Windows-Key+L on Windows, Control+Shift+Eject on Macs with an Eject key, Control+Shift+Power on Macs without an Eject key).

Please aim to do this by April 22, 2019.

If you find Level I data that you have a business need to keep on your computer, please let your supervisor know; HSU's information security team is required to know where Level I data is stored on campus. The information security team will monitor the results to ensure everyone's computer has been checked.
