Seismic Retrofit Project Update: Crane Safety Measures

March 29, 2019

Dear Campus Community,

As seismic retrofitting of the Theatre Arts building continues, our contractor will be erecting a large crane in the service parking lot located north of the building and directly east of the Main entrance to the Library. The crane will be vital for loading and moving steel and other materials during renovations.

Under California Occupational Health and Safety Administration regulations, the crane must be able to rotate 360 degrees without obstruction to keep it stabilized during high winds.

Due to this requirement and to ensure the safety of the campus, the top of an adjacent redwood tree located west of the Art A Building will be removed Saturday, March 30. The rest of the tree will be removed this summer. As with most tree removals on campus, the lumber will be reused on the campus.

Thank you.
