Spring Break Travel Safety Tips

March 11, 2016

Wherever your Spring Break travels take you, it is important to take a few extra precautions beforehand to ensure you have a safe trip. Humboldt County, with its inclement weather and windy mountain roads, can be a little tough to navigate sometimes, but here are a few tips before you head out and enjoy your week off.

First, wherever you are heading, you can check the road conditions for your route on the Cal Trans website (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/statemap.htm), or by calling 800.427.7623. This way, you can avoid mudslides, flooding and construction that can slow your trip down, or worse yet, put you in an unsafe spot.

Next, know whether or not you can expect rain, snow, storms, or other inclement weather by checking the National Weather Service for weather conditions: http://www.weather.gov/

Finally, Ready.gov has some tips on car safety, as well as building a car emergency kit in case you get stranded. Things like a few extra bottles of water or a flashlight can make all the difference in an emergency situation, and taking a few extra precautions, like checking your oil before a trip, can prevent major problems down the line: https://www.ready.gov/car

Ultimately, by taking a few easy precautions, you can ensure your trip will be a safe one. If you have any questions or want more information on disaster preparedness or safety, feel free to email eoc@humboldt.edu

Have a safe Spring Break!
