Strategic Planning – Launching our Second Century

Dear Campus Community,

Humboldt State University has evolved over the last 100 years – and particularly over the last decade – into an institution known for high quality academic programs, hands-on learning, a strong connection with the surrounding environment, and a balance of sciences, arts, and professional programs.

Now, as we begin our second century, the time is right to develop and articulate a shared direction for the University’s future. How can we ensure that even more students have a successful experience at HSU? How can we best foster and continue the development of a diverse and inclusive community across campus? How can we address budget and organizational challenges, while responding to increasing external demands for accountability? How can we build on our strong foundation and make the most of our strengths?

Strategic Planning Website

The campus community will be engaged in discussing these and many other important questions throughout the 2014-15 academic year. We will consider priorities, goals, and concrete steps we can take to make HSU stronger and better able to fulfill its mission. By the end of this academic year, we will have in place a new strategic plan with important initiatives to guide our efforts in the coming years.

The three major areas of focus will be:

  1. Increasing student success and academic excellence;
  2. Ensuring resources to fulfill the University’s mission; and
  3. Supporting an inclusive and diverse community.

Some topics will connect with all of the others, so the collaboration and communication among these groups will be critical.

The planning process will incorporate the work of a steering committee and three task forces, with associated working groups, as needed.

An important emphasis will be engaging the campus community, and we hope you find ways to actively participate in this process. We plan to provide opportunities in open forums, through communicating directly with committee members, and through the strategic planning website. Your ideas and your energy will be important as we work to identify the best strategies for getting HSU off to a strong start to its second century.

Sincerely,

Lisa A. Rossbacher, Ph.D.
