Sustainable Futures Speaker Series ~ November 20

November 14, 2014
Dear colleagues and friends,
We are very pleased to welcome Trevor Houser of the Rhodium Group as the next speaker in the Fall 2014 Sustainable Futures Speaker Series. Trevor will speak on Thursday, November 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in Behavioral and Social Sciences Building room 166 (BSS 166) on the HSU campus. The title of his talk is “China's Energy Future: Domestic Drivers and Global Consequences."
Trevor Houser is a partner with the Rhodium Group (RHG) and leads the firm’s energy and natural resources work. His portfolio supports the investment management, strategic planning, and policy needs of RHG clients in the financial, corporate, and government sectors. Trevor is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Committee on US-China Relations and serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for US-China Relations at the Asia Society. During 2009, Houser left RHG temporarily to serve as Senior Advisor to the US State Department where he worked on a broad range of international energy, natural resource, and environmental policy issues. While in government, he negotiated seven bilateral US-China energy agreements, including the US-China Shale Gas Initiative and the establishment of the US-China Clean Energy Research Center. He also served as a US climate change negotiator through the Copenhagen conference in 2009.
The US and China just announced a historic bilateral agreement on climate change. The accord represents an important step forward on international cooperation on climate change, and it has the potential to set the stage for productive negotiations at next year's December 2015 climate summit in Paris. However, the eventual significance of the agreement rests strongly on the ability of the US and China to follow through on their commitments.
Trevor is well versed in the nuances of energy and climate policy in both the US and China, and his work contributed to the recently announced agreement. He will provide an insider's perspective on climate change policy, the future of energy in China, and the prospect for successful climate negotiations. If these topics are of interest, you do not want to miss this talk. It will be a very good one on a crucially important topic.
