Time to Check Your Computer for Level I Data

April 27, 2017

All too often, people may have their own social security number on their computer without even realizing it. That can be embarrassing enough, but it's a lot worse if someone else's information ends up on your computer - that's a situation that can cause problems not just for you but for the university.

So once a year, ITS requires all HSU-managed computers to be checked for the presence of Level I data - the kind of personally identifiable data (including social security numbers) that can be used by hackers and identity thieves.

It's a quick and easy process - just go to the ITS Identity Finder service page and follow the instructions under Using This Service. The Identity Finder software is already installed on your computer, so just set it to run one day before you leave the office, and it'll be all done by the time you come in next day.

HSU's information security team will follow up on the results over the summer to ensure everyone's computer has been checked.
