February 7, 2017

ARCATA, Calif. – A pair of Bay Area legends will headline the 32nd Annual Celebrity Dinner & Sports Auction on Fri., March 24 at the Sequoia Conference Center in Eureka. Three-time World Series champion and former Oakland Athletics pitcher Vida Blue will speak live at the event, while former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion Steve Young will join the event via live videoconference.

“It's great to have two guest speakers lined up,” said Interim Athletic Director Tom Trepiak. “It should offer something for everyone with Bay Area baseball and football being represented with Vida Blue and Steve Young. I am excited about the new venue for the auction. I have attended several functions at the Sequoia Conference Center and have been impressed each time with the audio and video components.”

Individual tickets for the event are $100 and all funds raised at the event go toward scholarships for Humboldt State student-athletes.

“It's a critical fundraiser for us as all the money raised goes to scholarships,” said Trepiak. “And this year's event comes at a very important time for the future of athletics. I always appreciate the enthusiasm that our friends and fans have at this event and look forward to more of the same.”

A six-time All Star and the 1971 Cy Young Award winner and American League MVP, Blue spent much of his 17-year Major League Baseball career in the Bay Area. He pitched for the Athletics from 1969-77 and spent six seasons with the San Francisco Giants (1978–81; 1985–86). Blue is one of only four pitchers in major league history to start the All-Star Game for both the American League (1971) and National League (1978). The lefty from Mansfield, La., compiled a 209-161 win-loss record to go with a 3.27 career ERA and 2,175 strikeouts.

Young played 15 seasons in the National Football League, but will always be remembered for his 12 seasons with the 49ers. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection (1992-98) and a two-time NFL Most Valuable Player (1992 and 1994). The Salt Lake City, Utah, native finished his NFL career with 232 touchdown passes and 33,124 passing yards. Young makes his third appearance as a Celebrity Dinner & Sports Auction speaker. The 49ers great was also the guest speaker in 1989 and 1993.

CSN Bay Area reporter and Humboldt State alum Matt Maiocco returns to his role of interviewer for the event.
