Centered around Jodenbreestraat, the Old Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam was renowned from the late19th century until the Second World War for its lively, vibrant atmosphere. The streets were lined with Jewish shops and street vendors selling all manner of goods, creating a special character that attracted the attention of artists and writers. It was also one of the poorest districts of Amsterdam, filled with alleys and slums housing Eastern European Jewish immigrants in appalling conditions.
