KNUD DYBY
Danish Rescuer

Photograph of Knud Dyby holding smuggled wartime documents, Northern California, 1984

Until the end of the war Knud continued in his underground resistance efforts, conveying to Swedish safety over thirty Allied airmen downed behind enemy lines, and arranging for the transport of enormous quantities of suppressed information and photographs to be used in the foreign press to alert people of the true conditions of the Nazi-occupied countries. Perhaps it was his upbringing in the milieu of the printing trade that helped him understand the importance of truthful information for the war effort. Knud alone was responsible for as much as eighty percent of the information that reached Sweden from Denmark in the last months of 1944 and the first three months of 1945.
