Alice Paulus
Dutch Rescuer

A year went by before Alice managed a birthday surprise for the Jewish couple, Seli and Michel Nathan. They arranged for the Nathans' deaf infant daughter, who was in hiding in another part of Holland, to make the two and a half hour train journey to visit her parents for a few hours. The Nathans never forgot the kindness.

As the war dragged on, the danger of betrayal became increasingly nervewracking on the household. A special hiding place was dug out under the kitchen floor, deep enough for the Nathans to sit up, but not to stand. For six months they slept every night in this hole, concealed above by a rug and the kitchen table.

By the war's end the two couples were fast friends, Alice considering Seli as a sister.
