Emanuel Marcus, a pre-war tenant of the Steenstra's, volunteered to go to a German work camp early in the war. Later, when the Germans sent him to Westerbork concentration camp, he finally awoke to the seriousness of the Nazi threat. He made a remarkable escape from Westerbork, returning to the Steenstra home to hide. His brother soon joined him there.

Sensing imminent danger, Emanuel's brother left several weeks before the raid. Another brother, Carl Marcus, credits the package of clothes that Louisa Steenstra brought to him at Westerbork Concentration Camp as saving his and his wife, Anne Marie's lives. Louisa bravely entered the camp to deliver the suitcases of clothing, despite warnings of danger to her personal safety.
