ResNet Acceptable Use Policy

The Cal Poly Humboldt ResNet connects computers and devices to the Interent and to campus resources. It also provides access to national and international computer networks. As you explore ResNet and the Internet, you will discover the many advantages of network connectivity. However, network connectivity also requires that you understand the responsibilities of being a network user in order to protect the integrity of the system and the integrity of other users. The following policies are intended to help you use ResNet responsibly.

Using the Humboldt ResNet is a privilege.

You are not allowed to use your connection to:

  • Run a business or organization for profit or nonprofit purposes.
  • Monitor data on the network by means of any monitoring or "sniffer" software.
  • Provide a pass-through site to other campus hosts.
  • Provide remote login (e.g. Telnet accessor remote access)on your computer for others than yourself.
  • Transfer copyrighted materials to or from any system via ResNet without express consent of the owner.

You will be disconnected from the network if:

  • You use an IP address, or port that is not assigned to you.
  • You modify or tamper with network services, wiring, and ports in your room. This includes extending the network beyond the single network outlet (e.g. routers, switches, wireless access points or wireless range extenders).
  • You view, copy, alter, or destroy any file, or connect to a host on a network without explicit permission of the owner.
  • You attempt to circumvent protection schemes or exercise security loopholes in any computer or network component.
  • You run any type of server that can interfere with others ability to use ResNet (e.g. DHCP or DNS servers.)
  • You run any peer-to-peer (p2p) applications.

The ResNet network is a shared resource. Use of applications which inhibit or interfere with the use of the network by others is not permitted. This includes applications that use unusually high portions of bandwidth for extended periods of time or causes someone else's computer on the network to malfunction. Users may be asked by a ResNet system administrator to cease any system activity that causes problems on the network.

These policies are in ADDITION to the California State University Responsible Use Policy ICSUAM 8105.00. The California State University Responsible Use Policy is available at https://calstate.policystat.com/policy/10593951/latest/.

Each Resident is ultimately responsible for ALL the network activity to and from their assigned port and/or computer.
