Involving Students

Good research begins with good researchers. An important goal of the River Institute is to intellectually challenge graduate and undergraduate students outside the traditional classroom. For example, here is one laboratory exercise:

Field Work

HSU students working on a stream assessment protocol on Jolly Giant Creek adjacent to the Humboldt State University campus.

Estimate how many acres of vineyard could be supported by diverting streamflows while not compromising anadromous salmonid populations or the Sullivan Gulch stream ecosystem using only a string, meter stick, line level, and life-sized wooden cutout of a Coho salmon.

The River Institute offers students opportunities to excel. We involve students directly through internships, class projects, seminars as well as support student participation in scientific conferences and graduate student research assistantships.
