Jen began her career in social work 21 years creating programs to address cultural conflict and isolation in public housing in Seattle. She went on to do crisis counseling for domestic violence shelters and family planning clinics before getting her MSW from the University of Washington in 1999. Working in an isolated clinic in Nicaragua, Jen completed some her MSW work abroad. Jen then worked in the Seattle area for 7 years in a range of roles including street outreach, case management, crisis intervention, community advocacy, education, clinical treatment, and program management. She has worked extensively with homeless youth and families as well women and children experiencing violence. Since moving to Humboldt County 7 years ago, she has been doing school social work in rural southern Humboldt schools and maintains a private practice in Arcata. Jen has been teaching at HSU since 2012.
