Spanish Abroad — Oaxaca, Mexico

THIS PROGRAM WILL NOT BE OFFERED THIS SUMMER

Because the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning to Mexico, we will offer a program in Quito, Ecuador instead of Oaxaca.

Program Description

The Oaxaca Program is an intense, 10-week, full-immersion summer program offered exclusively by the Department of World Languages and Cultures to Humboldt State University students from all fields of study. Students from other universities and colleges, as well as community members, are also encouraged to apply.

Interested students who meet minimum qualifications should apply in the fall semester by completing the on-line application generally not later than the 15th of February.

Location

Oaxaca is a state located in the southeastern region of Mexico; it borders on the north with Veracruz and Puebla, Chiapas on the east, Guerrero on the west, and the Pacific Ocean on the south. [Map] The pleasant sub-tropical climate and the serenity of distant places attract most travelers to the Oaxaca Valley. It has peaks reaching almost 10,000 feet (more than 3,000 meters), caverns among the deepest in the world, virgin beaches, hidden jungles, and luminous valleys that house populations where, as a crucible, cultures of all people who once lived in its midst come together. Zapotecs, Mixtecs, and the fourteen other ethnic groups are still present in its culture and customs. Oaxaca is the most diverse state in Mexico. Oaxaca, the state capital, declared Humanity's Cultural Patrimony by UNESCO, owes its fame to the beauty and harmony of its architecture, the richness of its cultural traditions. [More information]
