Student Experiences

Stephanie J. Rodriguez

Service Learning Student, Spanish Heritage Speakers

“Although my time at the McKinleyville Family Resource Center has been short, I have already found a second family. The amount of love and dedication that Sandi and every member puts into truly enriching and sustaining a healthy community life is heartwarming. Not only are the clients always first priority, but Sandi always makes sure the volunteers feel happy and welcomed as well. I have a busy schedule and balance my service learning with school, work, and my sorority. However, coming in to the facility to do my service learning surrounds me in an environment where everyone is viewed equally and second chances are offered. It is very rewarding to know that I am part of something so much bigger that is working day by day to better the community directly and we can't wait to see where the program goes and all we will accomplish as we continue to grow and expand.”

Community Partner Experiences

Ellen Marie

Development Director, Sequoia Humane, partnering with HSU Business Administration Strategic Management Service Learning course

"The research students did about our business and competitors was invaluable. We have taken very helpful ideas from the student group: 'Wagg Sale', 'Saving more than money' slogan, using the company van for promotion..."

Community Partner

Fieldbrook School, Spanish Program

"Every student coming in from HSU has been phenomenal. Fieldbrook students and HSU students have learned to understand each other, their cultures, and taking what they've learned outside of the classroom."

Emily Sinkhorn

Natural Resources Services, Redwood Community Action Agency

"One impressive student utilized his sociology understanding and personal photography skills to help the Community Bike Kitchen tell the stories of several bike kitchen volunteers. This helped the bike kitchen appeal to new potential members and celebrate the positive influence the bike kitchen has in the community."

Greg Gehr

Executive Director, Northern CA Indian Development Council

"This is the 37th year of this event, and HSU volunteerism has been a key part of the success of the Intertribal Gathering and Elders Dinner."

Anna Davison

Owner/Director, Stepping Stones Daycare

"I am excited to work with the HSU Child Development students. They bring so much energy and inspiration to my work with the daycare children."

Ruth Mock

Humboldt Wildlife Center/Bird Ally X

“We could not do all that we do without our student volunteers and interns! One of our interns, Courtney Watson from the Wildlife department, has volunteered hundreds of hours over the past two years and is currently in Klamath Falls on an emergency response team treating a botulism outbreak in wild birds. These students are literally saving wild lives.”
