The College of Professional Studies Welcomes Shawna Young as Our New Dean

We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Shawna Young, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at CSU Stanislaus (CSUS), will serve as Humboldt State University’s next Dean for the College of Professional Studies. Dr. Young’s appointment is effective July 31, 2019.

 

Dr. Young has served for 17 years at CSUS, the last three years as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Young's previous positions included Interim Director of Research and Sponsored Programs for three years, and Director of the Center for Excellence in Graduate Education for six years. Dr. Young holds academic rank as Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, as well as an additional appointment as Core Faculty in the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership. With an action research orientation, Dr. Young's publications span areas of examination such as: effective strategies for teaching physical education to students with emotional and behavioral disorders; the impact of an early field experience on pre-service physical education teachers; student research program development and evaluation; and an in-progress manuscript will share lessons learned from successful institutionalization of a large U.S. Department of Education grant-funded program.

 

As AVP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Young serves, among other responsibilities, as Accreditation Liaison Officer and has been leading Stanislaus State’s current reaffirmation of accreditation process with WASC Senior College and University Commission, which culminates with the Commission meeting this June. Dr. Young also serves as co-chair of the university’s 80-member team responsible for responding to the California State University system-wide Graduation Initiative 2025.

 

Dr. Young has an extensive background in extramural funding, securing federal and private agency grants, as well as philanthropic fundraising. As lead writer and/or Principal Investigator/Project Director, Dr. Young has secured more than $4.6 million in federal and private extramural grant funds; and while Interim Director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, approximately $17 million in grants and contracts was awarded to CSUS. Dr. Young has established and facilitated important partnerships in the community, including K-12 partnerships to create early field experience sites for preservice teachers, and external contracts and agreements for research development and program services. Dr. Young began her higher education at City College of San Francisco before transferring to CSUS, where she earned a BA in Physical Education. She holds an MS in Exercise and Sport Studies and an EdD in Curriculum and Instruction, Cognate in Kinesiology from Boise State University.
