Awards and Recognition SWE was recognized with the following awards at the WE16 Societal Conference held in Philadelphia, PA:
Outreach Every year, Humboldt SWE puts forth efforts in promoting STEM subjects to grade-school students. Girl Scout Day is one of the major outreach events that SWE hosts. For Girl Scout Day this year, SWE members worked with the local Girl Scouts troop to build Rube Goldberg mechanisms. This activity was organized by Jennifer Barranco Rendon, the section’s project manager, and was inspired by the Rube Goldberg projects that ENGR 215 students must complete in the Humboldt ERE program. Scouts were exposed to the design process and team work that engineering students and engineers encounter with a project.
Outreach Co-Chairs In addition to the annual Girl Scouts Day event, Humboldt SWE introduced Engineering Fest, a new outreach event, spearheaded by the section’s two outreach chairs, Kaileigh Vincent-Welling and Lynn Phebe Brown. Engineering Fest had over a dozen hands-on activities that local grade-school students could explore. The activities presented different engineering concepts, including static and dynamic forces, electromagnetism, and fluid mechanics. SWE hopes to make Engineering Fest an annual event to encourage more STEM involvement in grade-school students and bring together other ERE clubs and organizations on campus. Professional Development One of Humboldt SWE’s goals is to help students enhance their technical and professional skills. Throughout the year, Humboldt SWE offered a variety of workshops for ERE students, including cover letter, StrengthsQuest®, and AutoCAD workshops. The cover letter workshop aided students in understanding the purpose of a cover letter and the content that makes a strong cover letter. The StrengthsQuest® assisted students in identifying and applying their natural strengths in social, academic, and professional settings. The AutoCAD workshop provided students with basic CAD skills and knowledge to develop plans. Humboldt SWE’s professional development Chair, Lexie Folkerts, also teamed up with the local California Redwood Coast professional section to develop a new mentor program. Although the program is still in its early stages, Lexie was able to host a mentor meet and greet to help build a relationship between the local collegiate and professional sections. Through the event, members were able to get to know the professionals in a comfortable social environment. The section also funded and sent ten students to the annual WE Local conference in San Jose, California, and three members to the local SWE Leadership Summit in Berkeley, California. At these events, members were able to participate in workshops, meet other collegiate SWE members, meet professionals, and attend career fairs. Humboldt SWE plans to continue to send members to conferences and leadership summits. With funding from the Enchilada Fundraiser, hosted by the California Redwood Coast section, SWE hopes to send students and professional members to the upcoming WE17 Societal Conference in Austin Texas. President: Laura Wallace At the national SWE conference, Humboldt SWE won Best Small Section Outreach Event, Best Small Section Professional Development Event, Best Small Section Membership Retention, Best Small School Communications, and Outstanding Collegiate Section for the 2015-2016 school year. For the Best Small Section Outreach Event, Best Small Section Professional Development Event, Best Small Section Membership Recruitment/Retention, and Best Small Section Communications awards Humboldt competed against all other small schools (under 50 members). For the Outstanding Collegiate Section awards, Humboldt competed against all other schools in the nation, regardless of size, and won Silver! Humboldt SWE won the Best Small Section Outreach Event for their annual Girl Scouts Day. Around 40 elementary school aged girl scouts came to Science D on Humboldt’s campus and participated in 4 different engineering themed stations organized by Humboldt SWE and the Schatz Energy Research Center. This year's event was organized by Humboldt SWE member Terran Hilden and took place on April. The 2015-2016 Best Small Section Professional Development Event award was received for the professional-student networking event, the SWE Social, organized by Humboldt SWE member Heidi Otten. During the 2015-2016 school year, Humboldt SWE retained 100% of its membership which award them the Best Small Section Membership Retention Award. For the 2015-2016 school year Humboldt SWE won the Best Small Section Communications Award. This award recognized the development of the Humboldt SWE website and other social media communications. This award winning communications effort was spearheaded by the then Publicist and Secretary Amanda Lagasca. In the spring, SWE welcomed ERE’s new faculty member, Kerri Hickenbottom, as their new advisor. In February, over a dozen Humboldt SWE members attended SWE’s annual regional conference in Seattle, Washington with the help of funding from the club’s office, the ERE department, and the dean’s office. This was a first-time experience for many Humboldt SWE members and it allowed students to network, gain insight on the engineering field, grow professionally, and learn about SWE’s mission. Humboldt student Heidi Otten, received recognition as an outstanding collegiate leader within the region. Due to long time support from Humboldt SWE, local professionals have to come together to start a local professional chapter of SWE. In April, Humboldt SWE held the annual Social with the developing professional section, where both collegiate and professional members were be able to connect and network. There was record breaking attendance with around 50 attendees, including almost 25 professionals! |

For the Best Small Section Outreach Event, Best Small Section Professional Development Event and Best Small Section Membership Recruitment/Retention Humboldt competed against all other small schools (under 50 members). Humboldt won the Best Small Section Outreach Event for their annual Girl Scouts Day. Approximately 50 Girl Scouts attended the event at Humboldt where college student volunteers lead hands-on engineering activities. The 2015 event was organized by Humboldt Alumni Leabeth Peterson. The 2014-2015 Best Small Section Professional Development Event award was received for the three-part resume workshop SWE co-organized with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and was organized by SWE member Heidi Otten. During the 2014-2015 school year, Humboldt SWE increased its membership by 100% and received the Best Small Section Membership Recruitment award for that accomplishment. This year, Humboldt SWE won Silver for their overall accomplishments as a SWE Section. To be eligible for this award Humboldt SWE had to prove their continued dedication to SWE’s mission: Stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity. Accomplishing this mission is a team effort by all Humboldt SWE members, ERE Faculty, and the Redwood Coast Professional SWE members. |
