To allow clients to register themselves in the Dynamic DNS server so that AD based services such as SCCM and Licensing services can use hostname.ad.humboldt.edu to contact those clients

Test Plan: 

Test with dev AD domain and test clients:
Round one is complete. The test involved Development servers 1 each of a dev name server (devns)(Read Only) an addev name server (addevns)(Dynamic) a Windows 2k8 r2 Domain Controller (DC) and a Windows 7 64bit workstation (wks7).

The primary DNS address of the DC was aimed at the ADdevNS server prior to running DCpromo. Running DCpromo successfully created the Domain infrastructure needed in DNS (dynamically) to support the Domain. Test run with dcdiag passed without error.

The wks7 primary DNS was aimed at the devNS server and asked to join the doamin. This test requires that the wks7 be able to resolve the domain controller for the domain. Once it finds the DC it creates an account and then updates its computer information in the ADdevNS server (Dynamically). It passed this test and all ICMP test related to name and fqdn.

Next step
The devNS server and the ADdevNS servers have already been configured to support the ad.humboldt.edu domain name. The goal is to verify that simply aiming the Primary DNS address at the ADdevNS server the Current Production DC will populate the ADdevNS server with all current AD infrastructure records. It will also confirm no changes to our current DHCP setting will need to be changed when we move to production.

How??
1 Change the primary DNS address on hsu-addc02 to IP 137.150.145.199 (ADdevNS)
1a Change the primary DNS address on workstation its-s18219 to 137.150.
145.208. (devNS)
2 restart the netlogon service and run ipconfig /registerdns from the command prompt of both systems
3 run dcdiag to test the infrastructure needed to support the domain.
3a do icmp testing of fqdn for each system from each system
4 Change the primary DNS address on hsu-addc02 back to 137.150.144.10
4a reset dns on its-s18219 to obtain via DHCP
5 restart the netlogon service from the command prompt to restore the system back the production enviornment.
6 run dcdiag to verify all is back to normal.
7 review the DNS zone files on the ADdevNS server
End Test

Update 5/14/2013
Note: the original test procedure had an error. The IP address in step 1 and 1a should be switched.

The test has been preformed twice. The first time, No dynamic updates occurred, and the test was a failure. Changes were made on the DNS servers and the test was preformed again. On the second test the server updated DNS as expected but the workstation again failed. Addition changes where made to the DNS servers and the workstation now updates DNS as expected.
NOTE: The dcdiag test that were run on the hsu-addc02 server were full of expected errors. These errors were an indication that we must also include the hsu-addc03 server in the test. This server maintains all the FSMO roles for the domain. When you run dcdiag it tries to resolve the owner of these roles.

The next test will be completed as follows:

1 Change the primary DNS address on hsu-addc02 to IP 137.150.145.208 (ADdevNS)
1a Change the primary DNS address on hsu-addc03 to IP 137.150.145.208 (ADdevNS)
1b Change the primary DNS address on workstation its-s18219 to 137.150.
145.199. (devNS)
2 restart the netlogon service and run ipconfig /registerdns from the command prompt on all systems
3 run dcdiag to test the infrastructure needed to support the domain.
3a do icmp testing of fqdn for each system from each system
4 Change the primary DNS address on hsu-addc02 and hsu-addc03 back to 137.150.144.10
4a reset dns on its-s18219 to obtain via DHCP
5 Reboot all 3 systems.
6 run dcdiag to verify all is back to normal.
7 review the DNS zone files on the ADdevNS server
