All users of Humboldt State University's computing lab resources are responsible for the well-being and continued availability of the computing, network, and information resources we use. Ensuring a pleasant and productive working environment for all users requires that each user of the computing lab facilities abides by the California State University Responsible Use Policy .
Misuse of the computer facilities, whether by theft, mutilation, vandalism, interference with the study and research activities of other users, or hundrance of HSU employees' performance of their duties shows disrespect for the institution and disregard for the rights of others, and will not be tolerated. Such misuse of the computer lab facilities is a violation of one or more of the following regulations:
and other University policies and local, state, and federal laws.
The University will actively pursue disciplinary action, prosecution, or other legal action when cases of such misuse are discovered. Examples of misuse include but are not limited to:
- Removing or attempting to remove computer materials, equipment, or property without proper authorization. (Calif. Penal Code § 484, § 487, § 488, and § 490.5)
- Vandalizing or causing damage to computer buildings, furniture or equipment. (Calif. Penal Code § 594. Calif. Educ. Code § 19910)
- Maliciously accessing, altering, deleting, damaging, or destroying any computer system, network, computer program, or data. (Calif. Penal Code Section § 502)
- Using facilities for non-academic purposes such as for commercial use or profit venture unless a specific agreement covering such work is in place with the University.
- Occupying HSU computing lab facilities without possession of a valid HSU ID.
- Using another person's student identification or falsified student identification, or failing to provide student identification upon request.
- Submitting false information (written or oral) to any University office, department, proceeding, or individual acting in an official Univeristy capacity.
- Failing to comply with directions from an authorized University employee given in the performance of his or her duties.
- Behaving in a way that interferes with an employee's performance of his or her duties including, but not limited to, verbal abuse, intimidation, sexual harassment, or harassment based on race, religion, ethnic background, gender, or sexual orientation. (Calif. Civil Code. § 43. and Calif. Penal Code § 415.5 and § 626.6)
- Causing a disturbance or engaging in any behavior that interferes with normal use of the computer facilities. (Calif. Civil Code § 43. and Calif. Penal Code § 415 and § 647)
- Displaying or causing to display images, sounds, or messages on screens that could create an atmosphere of discomfort or harassment to others. Students should make arrangements through their instructor for a private work area if a class assignment requires them to access such materials.
- Being in unauthorized areas of the computer facilities, remaining in computer facilities after closing without permission, or refusing or failing to leave when requested to do so during emergency situations.
- Bringing open food or beverage containers into or consuming food or beverages in the computer facilities.
- Parking wheeled vehicles in unauthorized parking areas near the computer facility entrance or bringing bicycles into a computer facility. (University Code, Rules and Regulations # 3404 A and B)
- Bringing in animals except those trained to assist persons with disabilities.
- Violating University policies, regulations or rules.
