Security :: Password Expiration

Printer-friendly version

To comply with Federal and State law as well as CSU security policies and standards, Humboldt State University requires all staff, faculty, and students to change their passwords on a regular basis. If you receive an email informing you that your HSU Password is scheduled to expire, you MUST follow the instructions and change your password BEFORE the expiration date. If you need help coming up with a strong password, check out these suggestions for choosing a good password.

If you do not change your password before the expiration date, you will no longer be able to access campus computers, Moodle, email, the web or any other resource for which an HSU User Name and Password is required.

For most people, HSU passwords will expire once a year. However, staff using applications that deal with protected information are required to change their passwords more frequently.

If you have access to... Your password will expire every...
PeopleSoft Finance 90 days
PeopleSoft HR 90 days
Other PeopleSoft applications and all other HSU systems
(computers, email, Moodle, web, etc)
1 year

If you have access to more than one of the above systems, your password expiration date will be the earliest of the available expiration dates.

You will receive periodic email notifications starting 14 days before your password expires, so you should have plenty of time to make the necessary change.

If You Miss the Expiration Date

If, for any reason, you are not able to set a new password before the expiration date, you will not be able to login to your HSU accounts. But all is not lost - you can change your password directly. To do this, you will need to take of one two paths to verify your identity:

  • If you have registered your cellphone in PeopleSoft, you can follow the instructions in Account Settings to have a one-time PIN sent to your phone; you can then use this to access your record and change your password OR
  • You will need to answer the security questions you created when you first established your HSU account.
