To ensure users can access timely software updates and easily install apps from the HSU approved software list on to HSU-owned Windows computers, the University has deployed Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM). SCCM enables users to install updates when it's convenient for them, as well as to install pre-approved new applications. The applications offered in the Software Center will differ according to users' roles at the University, because the list of allowed applications is tied to the user, not the machine; this approach also ensures that applications can be installed temporarily on lab machines.
The required SCCM client software has already been installed on all HSU-owned and centrally managed Windows PCs.
Many of the updates pushed out by SCCM are related to system security, so users are requested to install scheduled updates as soon as possible after the notification is sent. See the Windows update schedule for more information.
Be aware if you are choosing to install a new version of an existing app, such as installing Microsoft Office 2013, that you will not be able to "roll back" to the previous version.
Approved applications can be installed from Software Center. We recommend saving and closing active tasks before beginning the installation or update process, as a system reboot is frequently required to complete an update installation.
Updates: After saving and closing any active tasks, click on the update notification pop-up and select View Required Option. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the updates right away or schedule them for a more convenient time. Step-by-step instructions are posted on the ITS website.
Note that the updates must be installed by the deadline shown alongside the required updates. The update process will be completed automatically by the system if you do not complete it yourself before the deadline. You need to be aware of this, as most updates require that your system be restarted for the updates to take effect.
New Apps: Launch Software Center. Select the application you want, and then click the Install button. You'll be notified as to whether you need to reboot your computer after installation.
SCCM is installed on the HSU network, and the necessary client software is installed on all centrally managed HSU-owned Windows PCs.
