TurnItIn Originality Monitor

HSU uses TurnItIn OriginalityCheck to teach proper citation and source integration, to address academic integrity, and to make investigating potential plagiarism easier.

The TurnItIn originality report shows a paper’s text, highlighted with any text that matches sources found in the TurnItIn databases. These databases contain vast amounts of web content, previously submitted papers, and subscription-based journals and publications. TurnItIn helps educators and their students quickly make informed evaluations of student work and then move on to the important task of determining what students need in terms of instruction, correction or judicial action.

To use with Moodle:

Instructors can add a TurnItIn assignment to any course in question by adding it as an activity or resource. Select TurnItIn Assignment 2 from the list of activities and follow the instructions in the Moodle set-up guide to set up a TurnItIn assignment.

To use with Canvas:

Instructors can activate TurnItIn from the create new Assignment page by checking Enable TurnItIn Submissions in the assignment module. The TurnItIn Canvas set-up video will guide faculty through setting up a TurnItIn assignment; the company also provides a helpful document entitled How do I create a Turnitin assignment?

Using This Service

Adding an assignment also enables students to use the software. Once an instructor has established an assignment, students respond by submitting their papers. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to receive the original results and you have the option to allow or not allow your students to see the results.

TurnItIn also includes the e-rater grammar tool to deliver automated feedback on grammar, style, mechanics, usage, and spelling. This function should save instructors time while providing them with more effective feedback on the student writing process.
