Jayne McGuire

Professor

Biography: 

Jayne McGuire is a professor at Cal Poly Humboldt. She teaches in the Recreation Administration, Adapted Physical Education, Special Education and College Faculty Preparation programs.  Jayne is passionate about inclusion in the classroom and in the community. During her career, she has as served as a special educator, a therapeutic recreation specialist, an executive director of an accessible adventure organization, and a Special Olympics coach and researcher. Dr. McGuire has published articles, book chapters, a text book and presented nationally/internationally on inclusion, universal design for learning, and self-determination. Jayne is actively involved with faculty development at Humboldt and regularly collaborates with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and the Student Disability Resource Center.  She is also a Fulbright Scholar who worked with the University of West Indies, in Trinidad and Tobago during the spring semester 2017.

 

Research: 

Dr. McGuire has published articles and book chapters exploring self-determination and how it relates to adult outcomes, recreation involvement, and quality of life for individuals who experience disability.  She is currently involved with research that examines barriers and facilitators for coaches working with individuals who experience disabilities.  Another research area of interest to Jayne is the benefits of community based learning for college students.

Consulting:

Jayne works with several local organizations to establish recreation programs for individuals who experience disabilities. She also consults with municipal recreation programs and school districts to create more inclusive campuses/communities.

Teaching: 

Jayne is passionate about creating recreation opportunities that are inclusive and promote individuals’ strengths. In the Recreation Administration program she teachers Inclusive Recreation, Leisure Programming, Leisure and Aging, Healthy Communities and Senior Seminar. In the School of Education, Jayne teaches Curriculum and Differentiated Instruction and Movement and Special Health Care for students with severe disabilities; as well as supervises students working in Adapted Physical Education. Jayne also has a background in pedagogy & learning and teaches courses related to this theme through the Extended Education Program
