Physical Education Teaching Option

Physical Education Teaching Education Program

The physical education teaching education program at Cal Poly Humboldt (Humboldt) offers a dynamic program where students build a strong understanding of legislation and how it guides assessment, student placement, behavior management, and pedagogical practices implemented to support each student at the K-12 grade levels.  Humboldt places a high interest in educating all students on culturally responsive pedagogy and equity for all practices within the classroom and our physical  education teaching education program follows these same beliefs.  Additionally, the program offers directed field-experience at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels where students will have the opportunity to conduct assessments, develop lesson plans, and provide instruction to a variety of students at each level. For those students interested in continuing their education, the Humboldt physical education teaching education program has been approved by the California Teaching Commission which allows a seamless transition for students interested in obtaining a single subject teaching credential (https://education.humboldt.edu/content/secondary-education).

A Career in Teaching

In 2020-2021 the California Department of Education reported that first year teachers within the California unified school districts earned between 47 and 53 thousand dollars, 74 to 84 thousand for mid-range teachers, and 93 to 107 thousand for highest paid teachers in small, medium, and large attended schools.  (https://www.cde.ca.gov/fg/fr/sa/cefavgsalaries.asp). To allow students to stay in Humboldt County or return home the Secondary Education Department offers both face to face and online program options for all students. Additionally, the Humboldt County Office of Education provides services for over 30 school districts and many of our graduates have received job offers and begun their professional careers (https://hcoe.org/employment/).
