July 28, 2017

NEW ORLEANS – The Humboldt State men’s and women’s track & field teams were named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Teams, and four members of the women’s track & field squad earned individual All-Academic awards Friday.

"The Humboldt State track and cross country programs have a proven history of strong academic success, and earning all-academic team honors this year in all four of our programs (men’s and women’s track and cross country) is an honor our coaching staff really takes to heart,” said Head Coach Sarah Ingram. “This is what we strive for; success on the track, in the classroom and in life, and it's a reward to know that our efforts to promote excellence in all areas of life are paying off to bring recognition and pride to our programs and university. It's all about the development of the well-rounded student-athlete."

All-Americans Marissa McCay, Ellie Earle-Rouse, Alyssabeth DeJerez and Kori Gilley represented the Jacks as individual all-academic award winners, and a total of 471 NCAA Division II female student-athletes collected individual honors. DeJerez earned the award for the third consecutive year, while McCay captured her second straight all-academic nod following a National Championship season. Gilley has twice earned USTFCCCA All-Academic individual accolades (2017 and 2015).

To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have reached a provisional or automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either the indoor or outdoor seasons.

In order to garner All-Academic honors teams had to earn a 3.0 GPA or better, and 191 teams were honored by the USTFCCCA for their academic success. The HSU men’s squad had a 3.06 GPA and the women’s team compiled a 3.17 GPA.

The 2017 track & field season was one of the best in program history. Seven Jacks represented the program at the DII National Championships and each collected USTFCCCA All-American honors. Teigan Eilers, Ariel Oliver and Tatiana Gillick joined the aforementioned Jacks as All-American award winners and each competed in the Outdoor Championships. HSU finished the championships with a program best 23 points, which topped the previous high of 21 during the 1993 and 1995 seasons. The Jacks finished with an 11th place national ranking.
