Scheerer, David

Scheerer teaches fiction and non-fiction film directing, producing and writing with an emphasis on indie filmmaking strategies and practices.

Scheerer has directed, produced and scripted award-winning fiction and non-fiction dramatic feature and documentary films since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in 1986 nominated his first film for a student Oscar.  In 2006 he moved to the Redwoods from Montana where he was the Co-founder and Director of Montana State University’s MFA in Science and Natural History Filmmaking (the first graduate program to train scientists as filmmakers).  He is currently a Professor teaching at Humboldt State University, while directing and producing work for The Discovery Channel, PBS and International Broadcast Venues.

Current Credits:

The California Environmental Legacy Project . Five wild California landscape films narrated by Jane Fonda & original score by Pat Metheny.  2013 – current.  Director and Producer.

THE MUSIC INSIDE. Scheerer’s $750K feature film directing and producing debut starring Amy Redford, Mary Ellen Trainor, Brian Wimmer and Kurt Kroesche (work in progress). 

YELLOWSTONE: AMERICA’S EDEN.  Director, Writer and Producer of the award-winning $500K documentary feature broadcast nationally on PBS and international television venues; winner Grand Prix du Cinema, Grenoble, France and finalist in competition at Wild Screen.

IN SEARCH OF LEWIS & CLARK. Scheerer was Director for Discovery Channel’s first component HD signature program for national broadcast in 2003.

REALITY’S EDGE: The Life and Films of Robert and Frances Flaherty. A $500K feature documentary feature (work in progress); David is Executive Producer-Director with writer and co-producer Betsy McLane (emeritus Director of the International Documentary Association).
